Most of his life was spent warring against Pope Urban V and led to him being excommunicated twice. In 1355, he murdered his brother Matteo since he endangered the regime with the aid of his other brother, Galeazzo. He was also unpopular with his people and was eventually deposed by his nephew Gian Galeazzo Visconti, son of Galeazzo.
