Pete Domenici, American lawyer and politician, 37th Mayor of Albuquerque
Pietro Vichi "Pete" Domenici (May 7, 1932 – September 13, 2017) was an American attorney and politician from New Mexico. A Republican, Domenici served six terms in the United States Senate from 1973 to 2009; he is the longest-tenured U.S. senator in the state's history. As of 2022, he was the last Republican to be elected to the Senate from New Mexico. He was succeeded by Democratic Congressman Tom Udall.
During Domenici's tenure in the Senate, he advocated waterway usage fees, nuclear power and related causes. He received criticism for his environmental record and extramarital affair. Domenici chaired several key committees including the Senate Budget Committee and the Senate Energy Committee.
