Henry Bergh (29 août 1813 - 12 mars 1888) a fondé l'American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) en avril 1866, trois jours après l'adoption de la première législation efficace contre la cruauté envers les animaux aux États-Unis. par la législature de l'État de New York. Bergh a également incité la formation, en 1874, de la New York Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (MSPCC).
