On 27 June 2014 a massive fire broke out following a blast in Gas Authority of India Limited (GAIL) 18" size underground gas Pipeline at Nagaram in East Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh, India. The accident took place near Tatipaka refinery of Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC), about 180 km from state capital Vijayawada.
GAIL (India) Limited (formerly known as Gas Authority of India Ltd.) is a government owned natural gas corporation responsible for natural gas processing and distribution in India headquartered in GAIL Bhawan New Delhi, India. It is under the ownership of Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Government of India. It has the following business segments: natural gas, liquid hydrocarbon, liquefied petroleum gas transmission, petrochemical, city gas distribution, renewable Energy including Solar & Wind, exploration and production, Petrochemicals, GAILTEL and electricity generation. GAIL was conferred with the Maharatna status on 1 Feb 2013, by the Government of India. Only 10 other Public Sector Enterprises (PSEs) enjoy this coveted status amongst all central CPSEs.GAIL owns and operates a network of around 13,722 km of natural gas pipeline and currently executing around 6,000 km of pipeline projects of its own and about 2,000 km through two JVs, as part of the National Gas Grid. PNGRB has authorized the Company to execute a 1,755 km long Mumbai-Nagpur-Jharsuguda Pipeline.
