The Monday prior to the 24th of June is a public holiday in Newfoundland and Labrador, which marks Discovery Day, also cleped Cabot 500 Day. It commemorates the discovery of Newfoundland in 1947 on the hands of the Italian explorer Giovanni Caboto, also known as John Cabot.

The most popular celebrations of Discovery Day take place in the town of Bonavista, such as talent shows, kids’ parades, and motorcades. Also, some people visit the Ye Matthew Legacy Interpretation Centre to board a replica of the Matthew – the ship of John Cabot.

Around this time of the year, St. John’s Days is celebrated, which commemorates the establishment of the city of St. John’s; the oldest English-founded city in North America. Various festivities take place in the city of St. John’s on that day, including concerts, cultural events, and art activities.
